Travelling with children can sometimes seem daunting, but it’s simply a case of being organised enough before you reach your destination. Spain has an abundance of amazing cities that are family friendly, including Madrid. If Spain is on your list, you can’t miss exploring the incredible capital with your family. 

If you’re heading to Madrid from outside the EU, just make sure you and your family each have an ETIAS visa waiver before your trip. Once you’ve got your documents sorted, you can start planning your trip to the land of sun and sangria.

Madrid is a stunning city, with great food and culture, and it’s an easy place to explore with children. There are plenty of kid-friendly museums and parks in Madrid, so you can get a lot out of your trip without having to plan too much in advance.

We’ve already covered things to do in Barcelona with kids, now let’s take a look at Madrid.

1. Parque del Retiro

Parque del Retiro is a fantastic place to take children. It’s a big park with lots of space, and in the centre there are beautiful fountains, ponds, and gardens. There are also rides for younger kids and some fun tree houses for older kids.

If you want to get even more out of your day at Parque del Retiro, consider renting bikes or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride!

2. Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

For football fanatic families, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is an absolute must. It’s a world-famous football stadium that was built in 1947, and is home to one of the most successful football clubs in history: Real Madrid. 

Even if your family isn’t into football, the stadium is still an impressive and fun place to visit. The Bernabeu is famous for its distinctive architecture and design—for example, its roof contains many bright lights that make it look like a spaceship from above.

3. Gran Via

The Gran Via is one of the main streets in Madrid and is known for its architecture. It’s a great place to take a walk with your family, see some beautiful buildings, and get some exercise in.

The street stretches from Plaza de España to Calle de Alcalá, so it’s easy to find your way around. There are also many shops and restaurants along Gran Via, so this is a great place to spend your time.

4. Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is a great place to teach your children a bit of history. It’s one of the oldest squares in Europe, and it’s home to a number of museums and monuments.

You can see the statue of King Philip III at its centre. The statue was installed in 1616 and has been renovated several times since then. There are also statues of some famous people from Madrid’s history, including Don Quixote and Don Juan Tenorio (the protagonist of another famous Spanish play).

If you’re looking for something more interactive for your kids, there’s an open-air theatre in the square where they can watch performances or even participate themselves!

5. Museo Arqueologico Nacional

The Museo Arqueologico Nacional in Madrid is a great place to visit with kids. They’ll love the hands-on exhibits and the treasures of ancient civilizations from all over the world. You can even see a replica of King Tutankhamen’s tomb, where he was buried more than 3,000 years ago!

If you’re looking for something fun to do in Spain, this museum is a great option because it’s free admission for children under 10 years old. You can also get discounted tickets online if you plan ahead of time.

6. Plaza de Cibeles

Plaza de Cibeles is one of the most beautiful places in Madrid, and it’s a great place to go with kids. It’s a huge square that has a central fountain surrounded by statues of famous figures from Spanish history.

The plaza is also home to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which houses some of the most famous works of art from throughout history.

7. Parque Madrid Río

Our Parque Madrid Río is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your family. With rides, games, and plenty of space to play, it’s got something for everyone.

There are plenty of attractions here: from pony rides to a petting zoo, from roller coasters to bumper cars, you’re sure to find something that will keep both kids and adults entertained all day long.

8. Palacio De Cristal

Palacio De Cristal is a fun and educational place to visit with children. The palace was built in the early 1900s and has been open to the public since then.

You can take a tour of the palace and see its amazing architecture, which features glass walls and ceilings. There are also a few things you can do inside of the palace, such as ride on an escalator or sit in an airplane seat!
