The whole site is just spectacular. It’s a site to behold from off the main road. When you’re driving up to the entrance and the kids marvel at the entrance lights that are there just to mark the driveway you know it’s going to be good.

What is the Christmas Lights Trail at Bolesworth?

The Christmas Lights Trail at Bolesworth is a 1.2 mile trail dazzling after-dark experience for all of the family.

You walk alongside the lakeside with the backdrop of the castle lit to spectacular effect, then you follow the pathways through the woods where you may spot a reindeer or two.

Our favourite part was the 5 minute laser light show right at the beginning of the trail. Don’t miss this.

There. are also the following things you can do in addition to the Christmas lights trail and there is also lots of places to buy food and drink.

  • Santa’s North Pole Grotto*
  • Arena Light Show
  • Christmas Party Nights *
  • Christmas Market
  • Reindeer Woods
  • Champagne Island *
  • Ice Skating *

The * in the list above means you need to pay extra in addition to the entrance price.

We've just been to the opening night of the Christmas Lights Trail at Bolesworth and here's what it's all about, some top tips and what we thought!

Where is the Christmas Lights Trail at Bolesworth?

The illuminated trail car park is at Bolesworth Castle.  The address for entry is Bolesworth Castle, Tattenhall, Cheshire CH3 9JJ.

Top Tips for the Christmas Lights Trail at Bolesworth

  1. Book Online before you go

It’s cheaper to book online before you go and you can also add your ice skating and Santa visits on then to make sure you can do them.

2. Timing

Start the Christmas Lights trail 5-10 minutes before the laser show is due to start. The laser show is just at the beginning of the Christmas lights trail and lasts for 5 minutes every half hour from 4.30pm. You don’t want to miss this. We set off a bit early so circled back to do it. You could also do it at the end if that fit in better. In fact you could do it twice if you plan properly.

3. Santa

At Bolesworth your children can meet Santa, leave their Christmas present list with him and also have their photo taken so you can take home a memento of these magical moments.

You’ll need to arrive on time to make sure they don’t have large queues and the experience will last approximately 20 to 30 mins from arrival to the end of the experience.

From £5 You can buy tickets here.

4. Reindeers

The reindeers are just before the sculpture trail if you’re looking for them!

5. Best View

My favourite view of the whole site was at the end of the Sculpture trail, so don’t miss this. I also LOVED the elephants.

6. Manage Expectations

You do pay extra for the

  • Santa’s North Pole Grotto
  • Anything you buy at the Christmas Market
  • Fairground
  • Champagne Island
  • Ice Skating

You also have to book in advance for the grotto and the ice skating and at peak times they might not be available. I was asked as soon as we went in when they could go on the fairground so factor that in.

7. Wear clothes for Muddy Weather.

The Christmas lights trail at Bolesworth takes place outdoors. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear for winter weather and potentially muddy paths. We did get pretty muddy feet when we went, and it was dry. They can refuse entry if they think you don’t have the right clothes on. I imagine this applies more to those heading to champagne island than to people turning up with kids, but you never know.
