How do you make wine tasting at a Vineyard in Spain fun for the kids? Well you combine it with a trip in a horse drawn carriage!

We enjoyed a lovely morning at Adernats Cellar whilst we were in Catalonia over October Half Term. Believe me I have attempted to visit vineyards before with the kids with varying success and at varying ages. I actually think I’m fairly scarred by a trip in France when they were toddlers and we had 4 children with us under 3 who were just trying to hide from the rain and wanted to play with the bottles, but I digress.

The tour around the Vineyard in a real horse drawn carriage was a lovely way to spend a morning and for us all to learn a little more about wine production and how they do it.

We learnt about how they take care of the grapes and how processes can be different and how they use different types of methods to keep the bugs away.

The girls also learnt to drive the horse and cart and received a really cute certificate at the end to say they had now become licensed to drive a horse and cart. A nice touch.

The couple who take you around on the horse and cart are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and kind too, and really put you at ease.

The tour takes you on a 45 minute journey through the vineyards and even to a tiny Iberian village . Incidentally you can actually book accommodation in the little village and I was a little sad we weren’t staying there. Perhaps something for another time!

After the horse drawn carriage ride you then visit the Nulles Wine Cathedral where they show you around the beautiful old winery and explain how processes have changed over the years.

It also appears that the design of the building is perfect for staging photos!

You then get to try some of their renowned wines and Adernats cavas, accompanied by artisan bread, hazelnuts and Arbequina olive oil. All absolutely delicious. They also make some pretty amazing grape juice which the children (and the adults) loved.

At around 2 hours the tour is a perfect length for everyone to get something out of, and of course we came away with a couple of bottles of wine and a couple of bottles of cava too to drink at home. Both were excellent value and very very nice.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this wine tasting tour as a lovely way to spend a few hours with the kids away from the coast trying out something a little bit different in Catalonia.
